Saying Goodbye to our Beloved Horse
Posted on 27 November, 2014 at 0:43 |
![]() |
It can be heartbreaking when we have to say goodbye to our beloved horses. What can we do and where can we turn? Some people find ways to honour their horse's memory through horse hair jewelry, framed pictures, etc., but it is not always enough. As we learn of the heartbreaking story of Stephanie Lees, who was devastated by the loss of her beloved horse Jake and ended her life only a day after putting him down. For the full story, click on the link at the bottom of this post. Thankfully, the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon now has a social worker on staff, who can assist in a variety of ways, including grief counseling. Erin Wasson has horses and understands the difficulty in losing a beloved companion. She is available to accompany Field Service clinicians on farm calls (if requested by the owner). If you have questions or would like to get to know Erin better, you may call her directly at (306) 966-2852, or if you would like more information, please visit the WCVM website at www.usask.ca/vmc (services). Thank you to Dr. Kate Robinson for this valuable information! Our thoughts and prayers go to the family and friends of Stephanie! |

Earlier this year the world lost a beautiful young lady and gifted rider by the name of Sydney Ellis. Her family and friends continue to feel her absence and miss the light that she was. They have created a bursary in her name at the University of Saskatchewan. They have also continued to use their heartache to educate others on the realities of texting while driving, so that other families will not have to feel that sorrow and brokenness. Her beautiful life was taken away and has forever changed their lives. So please think of Sydney and her family when reaching for your phone while driving, so that we can all continue to live #4Syd! I feel blessed to have known this amazing person, who grew from a tough little cookie into a beautiful talented young lady leaving this earth far too soon! It is my pleasure to be able to instruct an equine first aid course in Alberta, coordinated with her mom Tami, with a donation from this course being made to the Sydney Ellis "True Grit" Bursary for Excellence in Equine Medicine. If you would like to attend this course, please feel free to email me at [email protected] |

Thank you to all who have inquired about participating and/or hosting a course! We look forward to working with you and your horses! There is still time to get in on the first aid kit draw for hosts, who also receive their course for FREE (see below). Here's a bit more information for those who are interested in the equine first aid certification course (Canada/USA): Information for Participants: 1) The basic first aid certification course is one full day from 9AM-5PM and is the pre-requisite for the much anticipated advanced first aid course (to be offered in 2015). It is a combination of classroom and valuable hands on training. 2) Cost is $149 per person and participants receive a first aid manual, vitals card and certificate upon completion of the course. 3) Topics include taking vitals, pain identification, colic, choke, wounds and bandaging, hoof injuries, and so much more! 4) Equine Canada coaches can receive professional development credits. And this certification can also be applied towards the Ontario Veterinary Technician's training program. 5) Not only will you have the chance to meet new people, have fun with horses and learn new skills (or brush up on your skills), but your horse will also love you for it too! 6) For more information on the instructor and for testimonials from past participants of Equine Wellness Education, visit our website at www.equinewellnesseducation.com. 7) If you have further questions or would like to request more information on attending or hosting a course, please contact us at [email protected] or via our website. Information for Hosts: 1) Contact us if you are wanting to find a course in your area, or alternatively, host a course and and as the host your course is FREE (with a minimum number of participants). The maximum number of participants per course is 12. 2) An arena is not necessary. We instruct in barns, round pens, etc. and can be outside (weather permitting), providing there is a place to sit for the classroom portion. Two to three horses are required to work with (depending on number of participants). 3) The basic first aid certification course is one full day from 9am-5pm and registration is done through the website. Posters will be provided. 4) We travel ANYWHERE in Canada or the United States, provided that there are enough students to make it feasible. Equine First Aid is the first available treatment available to an injured or sick horse before a veterinarian can arrive. Spend the day learning valuable hands on skills, with a course that past participants have noted as "everyone who has horses should take it" and "whether a first time horse owner or someone who has owned for many years, this was worth the experience."
